Athletics Kenya has said it will name its 2016 Rio Olympics Marathon team on 1st May 2016. It will be holding trials to select the Olympic Games of the 2016 marathon teams in February, in an attempt to improve the performance in Rio.
But the teams will be selected in early May, after the London Marathon, as it was in the tradition of the past.
Eliud Kipchoge, the newly crowned Berlin Marathon champion, and World marathon silver medalist Helah Kiprop are expected to make the team as a result of the consistency in their current form.
Helah was the only marathon runner in the Kenyan team to return with a medal from Beijing with a time of 2:27:36, and also finished second in this year’s Tokyo Marathon with a time of 2:24:03. Kipchoge won this year’s London Marathon with a time of 2:04:42 and went on to win in Berlin with a personal best of 2:40:00.
Other people who stand a good chance of making it into the team are Kipsang who was second just behind Kipchoge in London with a time of 2:04:47 and Kimetto who was in third place with a time of 2:05:50. Chicago Marathon champion Dickson Chumba, who finished third in Tokyo with a time of 2:06:34, also looks to have a good chance of being included in the team, as does Sammy Kitwara who finished in sixth place in London with a time of 2:07:43 and was in second place behind Chumba in Chicago with a time of 2:09:50.
